2011 Wrap-Up

I'm a little behind on an end-of-2011 wrap up, but that's okay. I'll also be doing some Top 10 lists soon as well.

I want to thank everyone that helped make the past year another awesome one! After doing 9 conventions in 2011 (the most in one year, so far) and putting out 5 big releases (two regular comics, a digest collection, and two graphic novels), I can say that 2011 was pretty good.

What's in store for 2012? Well, "Wichita Gravy" #3 will be available any day now, and of course, issue 4 will be wrapped up by this fall. We'll be finishing up "The Adventurers of Liberty City" #8 and #9 fairly soon, and hopefully, a second volume collection will soon follow! "Simon Says" #2 should be wrapped and available by late February, while issues 3, 4, 5, and 6 should be released this year as well! And I have maybe one or two other comic related announcements to come...

On the convention front, two shows for 2012 are already lined up: ConNooga in Chattanooga, TN and MystiCon in Roanoke, VA, both of them in February. More show announcements will be coming soon.

So, already, 2012 is shaping up to be an impressive year as well. Thanks again, and keep checking here for more updates!

Happy 100th blog: My bid for Avengers writer candidacy

After hearing the news earlier this week that Brian Michael Bendis is leaving the Avengers family of books next year, I figured the time was right for me to step up to the plate. And why not, right? Give someone new a chance...someone fresh to Marvel...someone that has a love for the book and the characters!

I posted a few days ago that I was participating in the 30 Characters, 30 Days Challenge. Art Til Dark - this weekend!

This Saturday, November 5, marks my debut at Chattanooga's Art Til Dark Festival. It's a mini-market celebrating local artists, giving the community the opportunity to purchase some of our awesome creations. From what I know, they've never had a comic book writer/artist appearing at the outdoor show, so I'm excited to branch out to this new territory and see how it goes. Winder Binder and Leo Handmade Gallery stocking my comics!

Some unexpected, yet really cool stuff has happened over the past couple of days!

After being in Chattanooga for almost a year now (man, time flies), I've finally been able to explore some more of the North Shore area. It's a pretty nice area near the riverfront with good parks, great restaurants, and some amazing stores that remind of a smaller scale version of Atlanta's Little 5 Points.

Well, upon checking these stores out, I was able to work out a deal where two of them will be carrying my comics and graphic novels!

So, starting tomorrow, Winder Binder and Leo Handmade Gallery will both have copies of Simon Says, Bee Sting, The Curse of Stranglehold, Confessions of the Suggestion Box, and Tales from the Suggestion Box in stock! Both stores are very unique in their layout, style, and inventory, and I'm excited to expand my stuff to non-comic specialty stores.

Todd Goodman...he's good, man!

It's been a little while since I've really taken the time on the blog to shower some praise on a fellow comic creator. To the best of my knowledge, I haven't really devoted an entire entry to that either. Maybe I'll change that and this will become something regular. But back to the main point...I wanted to take a few minutes to talk about the awesome Todd Goodman.

I met Todd at SPACE in Ohio this past spring. He was sitting at the table behind me and Jeremy Massie, which coincedentally was right next to Katie Omberg. We chit-chatted throughout the weekend, and I ended up buying a few issues of his comics: the first two issues of "The Powers That Be" and the first issue of "The Book On Me". I thoroughly enjoyed both of them, and Todd and I have kept in touch some since then.

Last weekend, Todd set up at the Roanoke Valley ComiCon and was at the table right next to me. We share a lot more laughs...Todd picked up several of my books...and I bought the 3rd issue of "The Powers That Be" and issues 2 and 3 of "The Book On Me". While I definitely enjoyed the 3 books from him I got the first time, I was even more impressed this round.

"The Powers That Be" is a humorous superhero book. By reading it, you can tell that Todd really appreciates old school team superhero books like pre-modern age Avengers, Justice League, etc. But there's also a little something reminiscent of the less serious cape comics, like The Tick, Flaming Carrot, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The art by Cory Butler is simple, yet effective, almost making it seem like this could be an animated series.

"The Book On Me" is my favorite out Todd's books. It's a humor filled, slice-of-life type book that reads like a really good movie. Centering on a group of friends that hang out at their local comic store, it explores what happens when one of the cast decides to make his own comic and ends up becoming romantically involved with his artist. This is the type of story I really like, not just in comics, but in books, movies, television, etc. It's filled with scenarios that make you laugh or shake your head, cause you've been there in your own life. Artist Briana Higgins art meshes well with the tone of the tale as well. It's hard for me to put my finger on, but it works and it works really well.

When I was reading these comics on the way home from RVCC, I told my son, Christopher, "Man, this Todd Goodman...he's good, man." Christopher replied with, "Well, I guess he has the right name, then, huh?" And he was exactly right...Todd Goodman is good, man.

I know a lot of people might be making the trek to the New York ComiCon this weekend, but frankly, you are all going to miss out. The Roanoke Valley ComiCon is the place to be on Saturday, October 15!

Not only will I be there selling all my great comics, but you'll also get other awesome creators like my main man Jeremy Massie, my homie Todd Goodman, my bud Lee Davis, and all kinds of other cool folks.

October shows: Nashville ComiCon & Roanoke Valley ComiCon

I've been a little under the weather lately, so that's caused me to be slightly delayed on some projects I wanted to start writing/drawing immediately after SPX. But no worries, they are all coming. I plan to spend a lot of time over the next few weeks polishing off the new issue of "Wichita Gravy", start penciling "The Adventurers of Liberty City" #9, and start feeding Katie Omberg some "Culver" script pages!

In the meantime, I'll be doing two more shows this fall...and that should probably wrap it up for 2011 (but you never know...). I'll be at The Nashville ComiCon on October 1st. It's got a pretty impressive line-up so far, so I think it'll be worth checking out! And I'll be at the Roanoke Valley ComiCon in Salem, VA on October 15th. It's a show I just can't stay away from, with it being the first show I ever did and organizer Chris Garbee just being an awesome guy.

Since both of these shows will be in October, I'll have a special Halloween deal going on...check back soon for more info.

SPX 2011 was a success!

Another SPX has come and gone. Much like HeroesCon, this show is like a mini-family reunion for me. I get to see friends I probably haven't seen in the last year or sometimes even longer. Jason Pittman, Desiree Pittman, Katie Omberg, and I were sharing table space. We lucked out and my good friend Jeremy Massie was seated at the next table over, along with other fellow dudes Jason Rainey and Shannon Smith.

It was such a great weekend for so many reasons. I got to hang out all day on Saturday and Sunday with these awesome people as well as catch up with other people, like Benjamin Marra, Holly Foltz, Rob Ullman, and Chris Staros.

And of course, the fact that this was my most successful con to date didn't hurt at all. The Suggestion Box titles do well every year, so that is always a plus. Some people picked up copies of The Adventurers of Liberty City, Wichita Gravy, and The Curse of Stranglehold as well! Bee Sting had it's debut as a mini-comic here (don't worry, an "official" release is coming soon) and between sales and trades, Jeremy and I were only left with a few copies. "Simon Says" did extremely well for me, Jason, and Desiree, and I couldn't be happier. A lot of people seemed to really like the idea behind the story and are interested to see where it goes over the 10-issue run.

I managed to creep away from the table a few times throughout the weekend and picked up some goodies, either through purchases or trades, like...

Five classic cartoons I want to bring back as comics...

This topic has come to my mind several times over the years, epecially as we've seen several 70s/80s/early 90s era cartoons being revived as movies, comics, and even revamped cartoons. I know I've been enjoying Kaboom's Disney Afternoon titles (Darkwing Duck, Chip N Dale Rescue Rangers, DuckTales) and Wildstorm's Thundercats comics several years ago were great. Here's a list of 5 that I would really like to take a crack at writing in comic form (in no particular order)...

1) PIRATES OF DARKWATER - A really cool fantasy/action/pirate cartoon that was dropped way too early. Marvel did a 9 issue comic series when this was airing on ABC, but it's definitely time Ren, Niddler, and the rest of the crew return to the comic pages.

2) SILVERHAWKS - Superpowered bird-themed superheroes in outerspace...what's not to love? This was a syndicated cartoon in the 80s that followed on the heels of the successful Thundercats. I loved this cartoon and looked forward to watching it every day after school. A comic was done by Marvel in the 80s, as part of their STAR Comics imprint. I know some of you would love to see it brought back!

3) BOBBY'S WORLD - To the best of my knowledge, Howie Mandel's creation about a very imaginative little boy and his crazy adventures has never been done in comic form. But it definitely should be and could be a really fun book. The show was cute and hilarious.

4) TINY TOON ADVENTURES/ANIMANIACS (tie) - I lumped these two together, because I just couldn't decide. Both Warner Brothers cartoons were huge successes in their time and Animaniacs had a good run as a comic book at DC (lasting about 60 issues). Even a shared book with shorts strips featuring the characters would be a blast to do!

5) SPIDER-MAN & HIS AMAZING FRIENDS - I know this team-up was loosely brought back in "Ultimate Spider-Man" some years ago and there was even an effort to bring the trio as a group into Marvel's history in a "Spider-Man: Amazing Family" one-shot. But I think Spidey, Firestar, and Iceman are aching for at least a limited series that's a fun throwback to the cartoon. I even came up with a great idea for their major villain in the story as well!

I kept the list at 5, but frankly, I could've done several more (Roger Rabbit, Defenders of the Earth, Captain Caveman, Grape Ape, and Thundarr would have been the next few in the list). I'm a huge fan of cartoons and think it's a shame that kids today don't have the same appreciation for "Saturday Morning Cartoons" (or even weekday afternoon cartoons) that previous generations do. Maybe I'm just an old, nostalgic fart...

Two more cons added: Rob-Con, Roanoke Valley ComiCon!

Hey, guys!

In the midst of working on several projects over the next few weeks (penciling, inking, writing, and even coloring), I'm taking a break to update my 2011 con schedule with two more added dates!

First, I'll be at Rob-Con in Bristol, VA on July 16, 2011. I've never been to this con, but recently met the guy that organizes it and he seems super cool. Furthermore, Jeremy Massie has been before and he'll be there again this summer! Looking forward to it!

I also decided to make the trek back to Roanoke Valley ComiCon for their fall show on October 15th. RVCC was the first con I ever did, back in spring 2009, so it holds a little place in my heart. It'll be cool to go back and show the area some of the new stuff I've cooked up over the past year.

HeroesCon 2011!

Hey, everyone!

This past weekend was HeroesCon in Charlotte, NC. Since I've booked up so many shows and my wife is on the verge of strangling me due to all the traveling, I decided to not get a table at the con this year. I'm actually kind of regretting it, however. The wife, kids, and I decided to just go for one day, just to spend money and see stuff. We decided to go on Saturday as a partial birthday party for my oldest son as well.

HeroesCon is in my top 3 cons of all time, no joke. The show is always great and it's perfect for comic fans AND their kids (huge plus, in my book). I ran into so many people I know and old friends...HeroesCon is starting to become like a reunion for me. It's funny, because it seems like that is one of the common cons that a lot of my homies from other shows go to as well.

Not only was I fortunate enough to secure another con appearance for this year (more info coming soon) and land an offer to draw a four page short in a comic (again, more coming soon), but I landed tons of awesome comics and graphic novels, such as...

I hope everyone enjoyed Memorial Day! Is everyone ready for some updates??

1) THE ADVENTURERS OF LIBERTY CITY - Brad is in the process of inking and lettering #8. He'll also be drawing the cover to this issue, which he should be getting to me soon for coloring.

2) WICHITA GRAVY - Brad, David, and I are compiling our stories to include in this year's issue 3! We plan on having it done in time for SPX!

3) SUGGESTION BOX - I finished issue 6 and sent it to Katie Omberg, so she can do her mini comic magic to it! She's currently drawing #7 (from my script) and she just sent me the script for #8, which I should start on this week. After we get these last two wrapped up, we'll compile them for "Tales From The Suggestion Box" anthology digest #2...in time for SPX as well!

4) THE CURSE OF STRANGLEHOLD - Melanie Florencio finished up the interiors and the cover last week and we sent it to the printers this weekend! It should be available by early July!

5) BEE STING - Jeremy Massie is hard at work on the pages for this one and it should also be done in time for SPX!

6) SIMON SAYS - Desiree Pittman is working on this book, and yeah, like all those others, it should be done in time for SPX! I cleaned up the script for #2 and will do the same for #3, starting this week. Surprises about this book will be announced soon...

7) CULVER - What's Culver, you may ask? Stay tuned for more details...

I (heart) Fanaticon!

Wow, what can I say about Fanaticon 2? It was awesome, really...after going to this show its first 2 years, it's quickly becoming my absolute favorite convention to go to.

I'm not certain about attendance this year, but I'm willing to bet that it was higher than last year (which I believe was 2700+). It's an extremely kid friendly con, and it was even more so this year with a designated kids activity area (making superhero masks, superhero slime, and more!).

Jeremy Massie and I did really well at our table. It was very cool to have so many people come up with "The Adventurers of Liberty City" trading card that was part of the Fanaticon card series, asking me to sign it for them. I also got the opportunity to talk with some other comic friends, like Brian Wingrove, Raven Perez, and J. Chris Campbell!

My words cannot stress how much I enjoyed this show! I'm already looking forward to next year and seeing what new and exciting events that the Asheville Art Museum has planned to go along with it.

Fanaticon - Saturday May 21!

I've become a big fan of this time of the year...spring is starting to give way to summer and the convention season starts to hit big time! So much is going on right now, and there's so much more that's coming...

* FCBD 2011 was this past weekend, and it was great! I was at Comics Plus in Macon, GA (my old stomping grounds) with David Simonton, Jeremy Massie, and Melanie Florencio (sadly, Brad Jaskula had to cancel at the last minute). We gave out tons of copies of The Adventurers of Liberty City Index #2 (and some copies of last year's #1) and The Curse of Stranglehold/Bee Sting preview flip-book. We had a blast just hanging out and talking to people about all of our upcoming projects! Can't wait for next year!

* Fanaticon 2 is in less than 2 weeks! I can't believe how fast it got here and I can't wait! Jeremy and I will be sharing a table again, so if you are near Asheville, NC, come check out this awesome FREE convention!

* I finished penciling The Adventurers of Liberty City #8 and passed it along to Brad for inking and lettering. He's also working on the cover that I will help him color...more info soon!

* I'm putting the finishing touches on Suggestion Box #6, which Katie Omberg wrote and I am drawing. It's a tale of the woes she had working for J. Crew! Should be a good one, haha.

* Some big updates on Simon Says are coming very soon, and I mean BIG...so keep checking back for more info.

FCBD offerings: Adventurers of Liberty City, Bee Sting, & Stranglehold!

Hey, guys!

We're less than a month away from Free Comic Book Day, and honestly, I couldn't be more excited!

I'll be a guest at Comics Plus in Macon, GA for their FCBD celebration, along with Brad Jaskula, David Simonton, Jeremy Massie, Melanie Florencio, and several other writers and artists! This is a special event for me, because it marks a return to my hometown area AND the first time Brad, David, and I have done a show together! To mark this occassion, I have TWO free offerings for FCBD!

First, David, Brad, and I put together the second issue of "The Adventurers of Liberty City Index"!

Last year's FCBD Index came out really well, so we decided to do another, focusing on the villains and the original team of Adventurers we've seen in flashbacks (so far, that is). It's got all the inside info on these characters, so it's a pretty cool little book to have.

Secondly, I worked with Jeremy and Melanie to put out the "Bee Sting/The Curse of Stranglehold Flip-Book Preview!"

One side has preview pages for the upcoming "Bee Sting" graphic novel I'm working on with Jeremy, flip the book over and you've got a preview of "The Curse of Stranglehold" featuring Melanie's art! This book will give you a taste of how awesome both stories will be! So, if you are within driving distance on May 7, I highly recommend you hit up Comics Plus to snatch up these books. I'll also have all my other titles there for sale as well.

Bullet points for what's up...

- SPACE was this past weekend in Columbus, OH. Though the show was slow at times, it was pretty cool, nonetheless. It was great to hang out with Katie Omberg and Jeremy Massie and I got to meet some great new friends-thru-comics. I came home with quite a haul of awesome stuff, some of it via purchasing but the vast majority of it thru trading! And even though it was slow, I can't complain, because I sold at least one of everything at the show...good times.

- I've added FLUKE 2011 to my list of conventions! The show is in Athens, GA on April 23, and while I've never been, I've heard plenty of positive things about it from friends and family. Since I'm a lot closer to that area now, I figured I would give it a shot. So, as long as nothing pops up between now and then and I get there early enough to secure a table, I'll be there!

- The Adventurers of Liberty City #7 is finished and off to the printers! I was just about to type about how excited we were to finish it up, but I think David, Brad, and I are always excited when we complete an issue. This one begins a new 3-issue story arc featuring 4 new villains and uncovering some history of the characters as well.

- In other Adventurers of Liberty City news, I started penciling #8 this weekend, and so far, it's coming out great! I think I'll be wrapping up these pages relatively quickly.

- I'm in the early stages of coming up with 2 other graphic novel ideas...featuring my writing and art supplied by others. More details to come...

- Info coming next week on my 2011 Free Comic Day offerings...check back then.

Bee Sting

You know, I've been talking about a certain project for a little while now...hinting at it here and there and the title of it is even posted on the Fanaticon exhibitor's page...so it's way overdue that I "officially" announce it.

Jeremy Massie and I are collaborating on a horror graphic novel entitled "Bee Sting"!! The comic stems from a short story I wrote several years ago and knew that it would either make a cool screenplay or a great graphic novel. Last year, Jeremy and I were chatting about some horror ideas and I happened to mention "Bee Sting"...one thing led to another and before I knew it, I had cranked out a full script for the story and Jeremy was on board for doing the artwork!

I have to admit that I'm pretty damn excited for this one, cause not only will this be ANOTHER chance for me to dip my toe in the horror waters, but I'm getting the chance to work with Jeremy, who has quickly become one of my favorite artists!

I don't want to give too much away about the project right now, but just imagine that if John Hughes and Tobe Hooper decided to make a graphic novel, it would be something like "Bee Sting" (not sure between me and Jeremy which one is Hughes, which one is Hooper, though). Needless to say, I'll be posting more plot info and some artwork soon.

Hello!!

Two new listings added to the 2011 convention list!!

One of my favorite shows every year is SPX in Bethesda, MD...I have such a great time there hanging out with so many cool people. So, it's no surprise that I'll be back this year! And I'll be sharing table space with an awesome group of folks: Katie Omberg, Desiree Pittman, Jason Pittman, and Josh Talley...and my good buddy, Jeremy Massie will be there at a table nearby! You better believe we're all gonna have so much cool stuff loaded for the show, so you don't want to miss it!

And the next listing isn't a convention actually, but it's still a signing and a pretty important one to me! I'll be doing an in-store signing at Comics Plus in Macon, GA on FREE COMIC BOOK DAY! Comics Plus makes an awesome event out of FCBD, complete with tons of talent, food, prizes, and awesome things for kids to do! It just so happens to be in my home town, too! I'll be revealing my FCBD offerings VERY soon, so you'll know what awesomeness to expect!

Top 10 CDs of 2010

Yeah, I suck...I'm waaaay late in posting my Top 10 CDs of 2010 list! So I can get on the ball, I'm gonna skip posting a picture of the album cover...Google it if you wanna see it. No time for excuses, on with the show (yeah, a Motley Crue reference...)

10. Sevendust - "Cold Day Memory" - Sevendust continually cranks out new albums, making this their eigth in thirteen years (very impressive by today's standards). While the band has yet to really wow me since "Seasons" (waiting for them to one day top that one, hopefully!!), "Cold Day Memory" features the return of guitarist Clint Lowery and proves they can still produce a really good metal album.

9. Nonpoint - "Miracle" - Another southern metal band on the list this year, as the band produces a hard and rocking album. Some nice, heavy tracks on this one, but I gotta admit, their cover of Pantera's "Five Minutes Alone" is wild stuff.

8. The Bird & The Bee - "Interpreting The Masters Vol. 1 - A Tribue to Darryl Hall & John Oates" - Yeah, this is usually not my cup of tea, so if someone told me a year ago that this band with an album full of Hall & Oates covers would crack my top 10, I'll slap 'em silly and call them Eunice. But here it is, and indie pop duo proves that hipsters love "Maneater".

7. Superchunk - "Majesty Shredding" - The North Carolina natives return with their first cd of original music in nine years, and they prove they've still got it. A great blend of alternative rock, pop, punk, and indie, "Majest Shredding" is full of energy and will get you going.

6. Kylesa - "Spiral Shadow" - What can I say? I love the southern metal! Kylesa returns with a cd, not too far from the heels of last year's "Static Tensions" release. "Spiral Shadow" is an impressive album, combining their metal sound with, as my brother nicely put it, touches reminiscent of Sonic Youth or Jane's Addiction. This band is bound to become HUGE.

5. Taylor Hawkins & The Coattail Riders - "Red Light Fever" - I think Taylor Hawkins can easily slap anyone across the face with this cd if they try to prove there's such a thing as the "sophomore slump". The Foo Fighter's drummer and his buds produce a helluva follow-up cd to 2006's self-titled debut. In fact, I think it's even better and shows how they've grown in 4 years. Guest appearances from Brian May, Roger Taylor, Elliot Easton, and Dave Grohl add great touches to a near perfect album.

4. Filter - "The Trouble With Angels" - Wow, Richard Patrick hit the nail on the head with this cd. Returning to a sound that we haven't heard since Filter's debut album "Short Bus" or that follow-up "Title of Record", Patrick and his new line-up deliver a great industrial metal listening experience! I'm not sure if the band's sound shift back to what it once was has to do with Brian Liesang helping put some finishing touches on the album, but regardless, I love it! Keep 'em coming...

3. Far - "At Night We Live" - Far was an alternative rock band that put out a handful of albums in the mid-90s and quietly disbanded. I guess they got lost in the shuffle of other bands with similar sounds at that time (Deftones, Incubus, etc.). I actually loved the band and was disappointed to hear they broke up after the great 1998 release "Water & Solutions". However, the band reunited and put out a cd this year, which picks up right where they left off. It's a good mix of heavy and lighter alternative rock songs and I hope we hear a lot more from Far in the future.

2. Deftones - "Diamond Eyes" - This has quickly become my second favorite Deftones album, following closely to "White Pony". I think the sound of this album falls in line with that 2000 release, making it a "sister" album in my mind. I love the mix of insane, hard-hitting, pounding songs followed by lighter, mellow tunes. The band continues to amaze me with the sounds they can make with their instruments as well.

1. Stone Sour - "Audio Secrecy" - A huge suprise for me this year was Stone Sour's new release. I had heard a few songs from the band before and liked them, but when I heard their first single, "Say You'll Haunt Me", I was hooked. Each song flows nicely from one to the other, almost as if they are telling a story, and singer Corey Taylor really lets his vocal range show here. Upon first listen, I knew it was a contender for the Top 10 list, but never imagined I would enjoy it so much for it to shoot past great releases by Far and Deftones. Good work, guys...you've earned a fan for life.

2011 convention updates: SPACE and Fanaticon!

Hey, guys!

I'm ready to start updating my convention appearances for 2011...cause I've already got two lined up, baby!

First up, I'll be sharing a table with Jeremy Massie at S.P.A.C.E. in Columbus, OH on March 19 and 20! I've personally never been to this show, but Jeremy's been a few times and loves it! Seems like it'll be similar to SPX, so I'm all about it. And to add to the extra coolness, Katie Omberg will have a table at SPACE as well, so I'm hoping that we are set up near her!

On May 21, I'll be attending Fanaticon 2 ! I loved last year's show, so I jumped at the chance to take part in its return. Jeremy and I will be sharing a table there as well. The fine folks who run Fanaticon also set up Fanaticon 2 trading cards, showcasing the work of some of the artists that will be at the show. I lucked out and got "The Adventurers of Liberty City" to be Fanaticon 2 Collector Card #4!! Click on the link here to see the card! These babies are available at various locations around the Asheville area, but very soon, I'll have my own personal little stash to give away!

These shows are just the start of the con season this year, so trust me, I'm lining up some other awesome conventions to attend!

Top 10 Ongoing Comic Series of 2010

Hey, guys!

I'm back for my list of the Top 10 Ongoing Comic Series of 2010. Last year seemed to be the year of some of my favorite series being doomed, basically. I have three honorable mentions, and two of them didn't make the cut because they got canned too early. So, honorable mentions are Secret Six (from DC; still good, but couldn't crack the 10), Nova (from Marvel; such a great book and cancelled without even a warning!), and The Web (from DC; easily the best of the Red Circle revamps, but didn't get enough time to grow!). Now, onto the list...

10. Chew (Image)

Even though this book slipped a few notches compared to 2009, it's still an amazingly odd and hilarious book about a special investigator who can gain all knowledge of victims from the crimes he investigates by eating their remains. 2010 revealed more about Tony Chu's past and introduced some interesting supporting characters.

9. Sweet Tooth (Vertigo)

Jeff Lemire's post-apocalyptic comic about human/animal hybirds possibly leading to the extinction of man continues to be a great read. You can feel the tension mounting with each issue as the title character helps other hybrids, while we learn more about the mysterious anti-hero, Jeppard.

8. Echo (Abstract)

Terry Moore's military/sci-fi adventure series has been a mainstay in my Top 10 list since it's debut nearly three years ago. Moore proves that not only can he draw a pretty face, but he can write some intense scenarios for his characters.

7. Darkwing Duck (Boom!)

I was a huge fan of the DW cartoon back in the day, so I was very excited to hear Boom! was reviving the character as part of it's expanding Disney line. Each issue reads like a lost episode of the series, it's near perfect!

6. Secret Avengers (Marvel)

You've got Brubaker and Deodato teaming up for Steve Roger's new team of characters who shouldn't work well together but totally do. Some of my favorites are here (War Machine, Nova, Moon Knight, Black Widow) as well as giving some spotlight to some very deserving characters (Valkyrie, Eric O'Grady Ant Man)...and I love Beast returning to The Avengers!

5. Thunderbolts (Marvel)

I started reading TBolts some years ago, when Norman Osborne and Bullseye joined the team. Each time the line-up changed, I wasn't sure what to expect, but found new favorite characters. When Jeff Parker changed up the team this past year, I was blown away. Luke Cage and John Walker (USAgent), along with former TBolts Mach V, Songbird, and Fixer, are training new (and old) recruits Moonstone, Juggernaut, Ghost, Crossbones, and Man-Thing!

4. Scarlet (Icon/Marvel)

Some people have a love/hate relationship with Bendis' superhero stuff, but you can't deny he can really write the hell out of a crime book. Scarlet is about a female character who breaks the fourth wall and goes into detail about the death of her boyfriend by corrupt cops and how the reader will help her bring down the system. Alex Maleev delivers some of his best artwork I've seen in some time here as well.

3. Avengers (Marvel)

I wasn't sure if Bendis could pull off writing a "classic" Avengers book, but he's done it and I've been impressed. He and artist John Romita, Jr. have assembled Captain America (still Bucky), Iron Man, Thor, Spider-Man, Wolverine, Hawkeye, and Spider-Woman along with new members (?) The Protector and Red Hulk to carry on the legacy. The first time-traveling arc was the stuff old school Avengers were made of, and the new arc featuring the Infinity Gauntlet has the makings to be great as well.

2. Hawkeye and Mockingbird (Marvel)

Man, this series was GREAT, but it got the axe after only 6 issues?!? Hawkeye joins Mockingbird's World Counter-terrorism Agency to handle the dirty work the Avengers can't get mixed up in. The team of McCann and Lopez did some fantastic work and made me remember how much I loved West Coast Avengers.

1. Morning Glories (Image)

If you've read any comic website in the past 6 months, you've heard about this book...and it lives up to the hype! Six teenagers are recruited at a prestigious private school...only to be find it filled with mystery, murder, and intrigue. New comics' "star" Nick Spencer writes a comic that leaves me wanting more each issue and I find myself reading this first when my monthly comics arrive!

Top 10 Limited Series of 2010

Hey, everyone!

Been a little bit since I've posted on here, due to new day job and a move from VA to TN (spreading my influence, one state at a time, folks), but I'm back, baby! And 2011 is shaping up to be an awesome year...but let's not discuss that right now. Let's look back at 2010, shall we...that's right, it's time for the TOP 10 LIMITED SERIES OF 2010!

Of course, I don't have the time (or more importantly, the money) to read everything, so if I overlooked something stellar this year, by all means, let me know. I should give a few honorable mentions, first...X-Babies (from Marvel - hey, the nostalgia of X-Babies and Star Comics characters got me!), The Ghoul (from IDW - Niles and Wrightson team up again), The Mighty Crusaders (from DC - started slow, but ended nicely), and Light (from Image - bizarre comic about light basically doing people in, worth the read). Now, onto the top 10...

10. Underground (Image)

Parker and Lieber's comic didn't grab me at first, but as each issue went on, I felt myself being drawn to it more and more. The story involves a couple of park rangers trapped in a series of underground caverns, running from some power and money hungry land developers. It reads like a really good action movie, which is something hard to find in comics at times. I have no idea how Lieber was able to capture the feeling of being underground in his artwork, but it's pretty amazing.

9. Atomic Robo (Red 5)

Clevenger and Wegener show no signs of slowing down with the greatness of this book. With it's fourth volume, we see Robo taking on vampires and going to Japan. A good mix of adventure, sci-fi, and humor. As I said before, like a brilliant blend of Hellboy and The Rocketeer.

8. Batman Beyond (DC)
I never really saw much of the cartoon back in the day, but I always heard good things. This new limited series brings Terry McGinnis into the DC Universe, by setting up a storyline where Hush appears to be back in McGinnis' future, taking out former Bat villains. Some old allies show up and a new Catwoman is introduced. This mini series paved the way for the upcoming ongoing by the same creative team of Beechen and Benjamin.

7. Tracker (Image/Top Cow)
I bought this book on a whim and it really impressed me. An FBI agent hunting a serial killer uncovers a strange secret about his assignment...he's a werewolf and he's turned the agent into one as well. I can easily see this comic becoming a pretty decent horror movie...it's filled with intrigue, scares, a love triangle, and action.

6. Spider-Man and The Fantastic Four (Marvel)

The same creative team that brought us last year's excellent X-Men/Spider-Man limited series returns to team up ol' Webhead with Marvel's First Family. It's set up in a similar fashion as the X/Spidey one...each issue chronologically represents a different time period in Marvel history with Mr. Parker teaming up with the FF to face an ongoing threat. There's little nods to several plot points in Marvel history here as well, like the Clone Saga and Secret Invasion. I would love another team-up series by Cage and Alberti...maybe a Spidey/Avengers comic coming up??

5. Nemesis (Marvel/Icon)
Mark Millar seems to be one of those comic writers that people love or hate. Regardless of this debate amongst comic fans, I find most of his stuff enjoyable. Nemesis is a prime example...yeah, it's over-the-top violence, but hey, Millar can do that well! I think I read somewhere that this book was described as "What if Batman was a villain?", which is pretty accurate. Nemesis is smart, calculating, and will let nothing stand in his way for revenge. McNiven continues to improve still with some amazing art in this book!

4. Hack/Slash: My First Maniac (Image)

Hack/Slash has never made it to any of my lists in the past, and I actually just really got into the book within the past couple of years. When it made the shift from DDP to Image, Tim Seeley kicked off the transition with this limited series, telling an origin story for Cassie Hack. Why did this book make the cut (no pun intended)? Because it reads like an 80's slasher movie in my opinion...and I'm a huge fan of those! Trust me, if you've watched movies like Friday the 13th, My Bloody Valentine, April Fool's Day, The Prowler, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and The Final Terror, you'll get the same type of vibe from this book!

3. Demo (Vertigo)
The first volume of Demo was something I nabbed up from a CBLDF booth at Heroes Con years ago and fell in love with. When I heard Brian Wood and Becky Cloonan were returning the book to DC's Vertigo imprint for a second volume, I was ecstatic. It was great in many ways. Each issue is a stand alone story, centering on someone who has powers...but their personal lives are the real story here, while the powers are the backdrop. That's what makes this book so powerful...strip away the super elements, you have a strong story...something which Wood excels at. And Becky Cloonan's art...what can I say...she continues to amaze me with what she can do with some pencils, pens, and brushes.

2. Afrodisiac (Adhouse)
Jim Rugg is hilarious and talented...we should all hope to be both of those things in our lifetime. His comic/graphic novel about Afrodisiac, a blaxploitation comic character spanning through the decades, nails it on so many levels. Each issue, done in each era or comic imprint's style, is amazingly detailed, and I can't remember a book that has made me laugh out loud so much. Highly recommended!!

1. Daytripper (Vertigo)
Fabio Moon and Gabriel Ba...these two guys are the type you love to hate and hate to love. Their stories and artwork are so good, it amazes you but wish you could craft something as excellent. This series is really something different, too, with each issue centering around the death of the main character, Bras, but with the next issue picking up as if he avoided or survived the experience the next issue. A summation by me won't do it justice...do yourself a favor and buy this book!

Wrapping up 2010...

Hey, guys!

I haven't posted in a little while, mostly due to the fact that I'm in the middle of relocating from Virginia to Tennessee. So, obviously, my posts will be sporadic for the next few weeks.

But I wanted to take just a minute and thank all of you for making 2010 a GREAT year in this self-publishing gig. I thought 2009 was awesome already, so this year had some big shoes to fill! Well, all I can say is that 2010 far exceeded my expectations...

In the last 12 months, I set up at 7 conventions was putting out 5 issues of standard comics, 3 mini comics, and 2 graphic novels collections! Wow, and I felt like I wasn't doing enough, but when I look at it like this, I really cranked things out this year!

I'm thinking 2011 is only gonna be better, though! Not only will we see more "The Adventurers of Liberty City", more "Wichita Gravy", more "T.A.K. Presents", and more "Suggestion Box", but next year will see the release of "The Curse of Stranglehold", the debut of "Simon Says", and a few other surprises to be announced VERY soon!

VA ComiCon in Richmond this weekend!

Hey, guys!

A big weekend coming up...the VA ComiCon in Richmond, VA!! This is the big fall, 2-day show with an impressive guest list: Ethan Van Sciver, Tim Seeley, Billy Tucci, Mike McKone, J. Calafiore, Joe Jusko, Rick Spears, Tom Raney, Alex Saviuk, Larry Hama, and so many, many more!

And of course, I'll be there holding down the small press fort, along with John Gallagher, Chris Flick, Dan Nokes, Josh C. Lyman, and my tablemate Jeremy Massie!

But hold the phone...there's more! The first 200 people into the show get a FREE indie press jam print by me and all those fellas mentioned above...how sweet is that? We all drew some of our characters with inks by Tim Dzon and colored by Will Nix!

I've fallen behind on the blog the past couple of weeks, so here's some big updates on what's been going on...

* I finished up the pencils for "The Adventurers of Liberty City" #7 and sent it along to Brad for inking and lettering! This issue starts a 3-part story arc with the team split into two groups facing four new villains! Brad will be sending me his drawn cover for coloring soon...

* "Wichita Gravy" #2 is DONE!! The files have been sent to the printer and I should be getting the book back just in time for the Virginia ComiCon in Richmond next month! More info on "Wichita Gravy" #2 coming soon...

* Desiree Pittman showed me the pencils she's done on pages 1-9 of "Simon Says". They are so good I almost cried...really! This is gonna be one amazing book, and Desiree's artwork is going to blow all of you away!!

* Melanie Florencio is making great progress on "The Curse of Stranglehold"! I'm loving the pages she's done so far, and this is shaping up to be a GREAT horror graphic novel!

* More "Suggestion Box" minis are coming your way soon! Info to come...

Remembering Wildstorm...

As most of the comic community already knows, DC has decided to end the Wildstorm Comics imprint . DC has specified that Wildstorm characters (presumably at least members of WildCATS, Stormwatch, and Gen 13) will be back within DC Comics in some capacity. Some say they saw this coming awhile ago, others say it's a good thing. As for my opinion, well, it feels like the end of an era. I liked Wildstorm being a separate entity from the rest of DC, and I'm hoping the characters don't get lost in the shuffle. But Wildstorm holds a special place in my heart of comics love for a few reasons. And to clarify, I'm going to list my 10 favorite Wildstorm comics over the years. I know some people will shockingly say, "Where's The Authority? Where's Stormwatch?" etc. But my favorites of this company have not always been the critical darlings. So, I'll go in alphabetical order to show no particular favoritism (or cause it's too hard to pick favorites)...

1. Crimson

One of the original Cliffhanger books from Wildstorm, Ramos and Augustyn's vampire book re-established my love of vampires in the late 90s after the "Interview With The Vampire" craze killed it for me for awhile. Ramos' art is one of those that either totally works on a book or totally doesn't...here, it was a perfect fit.

2. Divine Right

Jim Lee's fantasy/superhero tale of a young college student who happens to gain great, mystical powers and has to be protected from the evil that wants it! When I got back into comics in the late 90s (more on that in a minute), this was one of the gems I gave a shot. I was pleasantly surprised, because it not only showcased Lee's growth as a penciler, but as a weaver of some great stories.

3. DV8
Around 1996, I gave up on comics briefly. Chalk it up to lack of funds and/or disappointment in some of the books I was regularly reading. This break didn't last long (maybe 6 months?), because some titles brought me back. I made a trip to my local comic store for the heck of it one day and a few Wildstorm titles caught my eye. DV8 was one of them. I've always loved teen superhero books, but this one was different. It wasn't a near traditional one (see Gen 13 below) in that these teens were being used by their "mentors" and they were major outcasts...they drank, were offensive, and didn't care. Still a great book, and I was glad to see the book return in a recent limited series by Brian Wood.

4. Friday the 13th & Texas Chainsaw Massacre
I lumped these together because, well, I wanted to. I've been a fan of both series of movies for years, and their licensed comics over the years have mainly been misses. When Wildstorm got ahold of them, my hopes weren't high, but I gave it a shot. I'm glad. They were well written with great art. Wild, original stories that really fell in line with the tone of the movies.

5. Gen 13

As I said above, some Wildstorm books helped bring me back to comics in 1996. Gen 13 was one of them. A book about teen superheroes learning about who they are, their place in the world, how they got their powers, who wants them history, and interjecting some humor and pop culture references here and there. This book made J. Scott Campbell a comics superstar, and it helped that editor Sarah Becker was featured on MTV's "The Real World" at the time.

6. Leave It To Chance

I admit, I came into this book late...after it had already run its course in fact. I found some issues in a cheap bin and decided to give it a shot. I had some about this comic about a young female adventurer and the Paul Smith art convinced me. This was an action-packed book that was quite intriguing.

7. Savant Garde

A WildCATS spin-off book featuring Savant and her team (also consisting of WildCATS star Mr. Majestic) was a very cool read. Some action, mixed with an eclectic group of heroes helping out Savant. Ryan Odagawa's art really helped here...it was perfect for me with it's animated feel.

8. Thunderdcats

And speaking of animation, it's no secret that I was a HUGE Thundercats fan back in the day. When I heard Wildstorm got the rights to start putting out 'Cats books again, I was all over it. A series of limited series soon followed, worked on by several different writers and artists. It was good to see the 'Cats back in action...like lost episodes of the cartoon in comic form. Sorry to see it end too soon, but I loved every issue while it lasted!

9. WildCATS

The book that started it all HAS to be mentioned. When the Image founders all started their respective books, I gave a few that intrigued me a shot...Youngblood (c'mon, I was only 12, forgive me), Savage Dragon (one of my favorite books at that time), and WildCATS. I was greatly impressed with WildCATS, not only for Lee's as-always beautiful art, but it really showed that he was probably one of the best (if not THE best) writer out of those Image founders. Original concept, intriguing plots, and characters that people grew to love quickly. The book has had a few stops and starts over the years, each one drastically different than the last. But this initial 50 issue run was always fun, through all the writer/artist changes.

10. Wynonna Earp
I've met few people that know this book, but once they read it, they greatly appreciate it! While it's initial Wildstorm book only lasted 5 issues (IDW brought the character back for a 3 issue series in 2003), I loved it! Wynonna is a descendant of Wyatt Earp and works as a federal marshal hunting monsters and demons. Beau Smith's story was stellar (props go to him as well for the IDW follow-up), and this book introduced me to Joyce Chin's art. The level of detail astounded me when I first laid eyes on it, and since then, I've always opted to give a book a chance if I see Chin is working on it. IDW has released a softcover collection of all the Wynonna Earp stories, so it's well worth the price if you feel inclined.

So, that wraps it all up. I am interested to see what happens with some of the Wildstorm characters in the future at DC. But I'm sad to see some of the licensed and non-Jim Lee creator owned stuff disappear from the shelf. That Wildstorm banner was waved for 18 years, and that's an impressive run.

Two more 2010 cons added: RVCC, VA ComiCon!

Hey, everybody!

I've added two more cons to wrap up 2010 (hard to believe that I'll have done 7 cons this year, wow!).

On October 23, I'll be at the Roanoke Valley ComiCon in Salem, VA. It's a great one-day show put on by Chris Garbee, who owns Untamed Worlds comic store in Lynchburg, VA. RVCC was the first show I ever did, so that sentimental side of me takes over when this con rolls around again.

On November 20 and 21, I'll head back to Richmond for the big two-day Virginia ComiCon! Brett puts together this show four times a year, three of those being one-day shows. I did two of the one dayers this year, so I'm definitely looking forward to tackling a full weekend con again. Even better, I'll be sharing my table there with Jeremy Massie (did you take my recommendation and read "The DeaDBeat" yet? You better!).

SPX recap

Ahhh, fall is quickly approaching. Easily my favorite time of the year...the cool air, the falling leaves, Halloween, and of course...SPX! Small Press Expo was this past weekend in Bethesda, MD, and once again, I had a table at the show. Not only that, but essentially, I had 1 and 1/2 tables spread out amongst me, Jason Pittman, Desiree Pittman, Katie Omberg, and Josh Talley!

What can I say about the show? It was GREAT! I didn't think it was possible, but it was better than last year. I'm also pretty certain attendance was a lot higher (or maybe we were just seated in a better area??). Regardless, we came away from the show feeling very pleased. I sold a little of everything really, with the "Tales of Suggestion Box" digest graphic novel being the biggest seller.

I picked up loads of great comics, graphic novels, and mini-comics as well. I've been making my way through the stack since the weekend, and I've been very impressed. I'm going to have to take the time to do some separate blogs about the stand-out titles. For now, here's a quick list of some of the stuff I picked up (through purchases or trades):

"Sketchbook Vol. 1: big dummy"

First of all, I want to thank everyone that contact me over the past few weeks with suggestions for the mini sketchbook I'm compiling. I had so many good recommendations, I know some of them will overflow to a volume 2 to pop up sooner, rather than later.

But with SPX on the horizon (less than 2 weeks away, folks), I put the finishing touches on the sketchbook this weekend!

I decided to take my favorite sketch from the volume, make it the cover, and name the book something related to this sketch. Therefore, Volume 1 is titled "big dummy", thanks to the Fred Sanford drawing gracing the cover! Everyone who suggested a sketch that made it into the book will be getting a free copy of it in the mail! I'll be debuting the book at SPX (Bethesda, MD; Sept. 11-12) with 4 different color covers: red, blue, green, and yellow.

Tales From The Suggestion Box

If you ever check out Katie Omberg's blog at all, this isn't really "new" news. I apologize for being late on it, but this is ANOTHER big announcement for me.

Katie and I decided to do a digest-size graphic collection of the first four issues of "Suggestion Box" (Aaron's Framing, Hip Hop Hooray, A Titanic Failure, and Day at the Museum), our mini comics telling true stories of the woes of working retail. When we were discussing what the cover should be, I had an idea to do it like a classic "Tales From The Crypt" cover. Katie thought it sounded cool and ran with it...I'm super impressed.

I love the way her coloring makes it look almost like an old comic, too! "Tales From The Suggestion Box" will be debuting at SPX this year. Katie and I have tables right next to each other, so if you are there, come by and see us and check it out! I'll be back soon with info on my upcoming sketch book.

Sketch book contest!!

Okay, guys, I need YOUR help and input on this one...

I'm kicking around the idea of putting together a mini sketch book of sorts for SPX next month. I'll unveil the specifics of the whole thing in the next week or two, but in the meantime, I need you guys to do something for me:

Suggest characters/people YOU would like to see in the sketch book!

They can be:
A) 80 Pork Comics and T.A.K. Comics characters

B) characters from other comic companies, like Marvel, DC, Image, Archie, etc.

C) characters from television, cartoons, or movies

Announcement #4: VA ComiCon - Sunday, Aug. 8th!

I missed the May show and I wasn't sure I would be able to make this one, but I was glad to squeeze in another little con between the monsters of HeroesCon and SPX. It's definitely a cool little show to check out if you live within driving distance. So, check out their site, get directions, drive out, buy some books, and hang with me for a bit...I'll dig it.

Announcement #3: Simon Says

As I said before, announcement 2 and 3 would be the biggies. For those of you that have heard me ramble on about my comic projects, you KNOW "Simon Says" has been a project looooong in the making. I began piecing the story together 4 years ago, and after scrapping an attempt to draw it myself (uggh, I didn't like it) and a few rewrites, "Simon Says" is FINALLY going to see the light of day.

Taking place in the late 90s, "Simon Says" follows 18-year-old Simon and his circle of friends throughout their last year of high school and the beginnings of their college/post-high school life. Part comedy, part drama, it's loaded with 90s references, especially from that era's comic, music, and movie releases. I think everyone that reads it will be able to relate to at least one of the characters and identify with the situations (the good and the bad) these characters experience. I can't deny that the story ties-in with events from my own life, yet I was able to draw a lot of inspiration from filmmakers and writers whose work really spoke to me at that time in my life.

Now, onto the details...I was convinced awhile ago that I needed to find the right artist for "Simon Says"...someone whose skills just captured the entire essence of the story. I found that in the artwork of Desiree Pittman. I first met Desiree and her husband, Jason, at SPX and we quickly bonded. Jason was even gracious enough to provide a pin-up for The Adventurers of Liberty City graphic novel awhile back. Desiree drew the back cover to one of Jason's Leftovers mini-comics and her art blew me away! I loved it, and sent her an incredibly long email all about "Simon Says" to gauge her interest. To my utter surprise and glee, she loved the story and was interested in tackling the project!! It's a story with a definite beginning, middle, and end, but still to early for us to definitely say the number of issues it will take to tell the story.

Desiree is putting the finishing touches on a mini-preview book for us to have at SPX this year and the first full issue will soon follow. Of course, I'll update as more info becomes available, but until then, here's some of Desiree's thumbnail sketches for issue 1...

Announcement #2: The Curse of Stranglehold

What's up, folks?

Yeah, I'm on the ball, buddy...already back with my second big announcement. Now, I wanted to save the two best news items for last, but I couldn't resist. Now, announcement #2 and #3 will be the biggies.

"The Curse of Stranglehold" is an upcoming graphic novel that I am writing featuring the beautiful art of Melanie Florencio. Without giving too much away, "The Curse of Stranglehold" is a horror story, centered around a teenage girl who discovers that a local legend about an undead soul terrorizing kids in the woods may be real! There's a good mix of present day setting with flashbacks to the 70s...so this story really incorporates a lot of my loves...the 1970s, horror, and music.

Melanie is currently teaching art stuff at a summer camp (how awesome does that sound?), but she'll dive right into working on "The Curse of Stranglehold" in late August/early September. If everything goes as planned, we should have it all wrapped up in early 2011.

Periodically, I'll be posting updates about the progress of "Stranglehold"...for the time being, feast your eyes on some stunning conceptual design sketches Melanie's been working on...nice!

Announcement #1: Wichita Gravy #2

Butt patter! It's been far too long since I updated this blog thingy. Totally my fault, though (who else's would it be??). Between the day job, family emergencies, and {ahem} becoming addicted to my new iPod, I've been MIA from the on-line world. But I'm still here and I've got (at least) 4, that's right...F-O-U-R...big announcements to make over the next couple of weeks.

That means today is announcement #1, and it should make a few people happy. Brad, David, and I are currently putting together "Wichita Gravy" #2! Whoo-hoo...finally! Looks like our little freaky anthology will be an annual ordeal. It's too early for me to reveal too much about what stories will actually be in the second issue, but trust me, it'll be better than the first! Even better, we are cranking this baby out to have it completed in time for SPX in Bethesda, MD in September. Within the next month, I'll be posting some story info and the cover to WG2. And yes, more announcements in days to come...

A friend of mine recently (blah, I say recently even though she asked me several months ago and so many things pushed this back) asked me to do a little commission sketch for her husband for their upcoming anniversary. Since they dig horror stuff and their last name is "Adams", she felt an Addams Family themed cartoony drawing would be really cool. I finished the drawing this afternoon and it's on its way to her as we speak. Unfortunately, my scanner isn't big enough to handle this size drawing, so a photo of it will have to do for the blog's sake...

Comics & Music...it don't get much bettah!

Hey, guys!

A few little things to report on:

* Heroes Con was great, as always. This was the first time I've been on the other side of the table at the con, but I still enjoyed it immensely. For so many reasons, this remains one of my favorite cons...great people, spacious environment, a good mix of talent, tons of weird and wild costumes...I feel very comfortable, haha. Sharing a table with Jeremy Massie added to the enjoyment (if you haven't picked up his graphic novel, The DeaDBeat, please do so). So, yeah, it was good seeing some old friends, meeting new folks, and selling a few books in the process.

* The Supa Dupa Show, a cool weekly podcast from Asheville, NC about comic books, did an interview with me during last month's Fanaticon! The segment was aired on last Saturday's show (June 5, 2010), and it's at the 11:40 time mark. Click on the link here to listen to the show.

* I'm trying to line-up a few more shows for 2010, possibly one before SPX and maybe one or two afterwards. Again, you know I'll let you know when I get the word...

* I realized that I haven't said much about music lately on my blog. I realize this is primarily about my comics, but I stretch into that realm of babbling about music every now and then. On that note, I gotta mention that one of my favorite bands from the 90's, Far, recently reunited and put out their first album in 12 years (jeez, I'm getting old...). I'm sometimes skeptical when it's been such a long absence by a band, but man, this album blew me away. For those of you wanting to know some comparisons, they remind me a little of U2 meets Sunny Day Real Estate meets Deftones...worth it to check out. The new album is called "At Night We Live"...click to listen.

* And since I was on my 90's music kick (do I ever get off that kick?!?), I've been listening to Our Lady Peace's "Clumsy" today and was reminded all over again how great that cd is...enjoy a flashback on me.

Hey, everyone!

Loads of stuff to tell you all...the past couple of days have been pretty phenomenal. Here we go...

* First, I gotta mention how awesome Fanaticon was this past Saturday. I had no idea this was the first ever Fanaticon in Asheville, so I was even more surprised with it! It was put together very well, great promoting throughout the city, organized, and an incredible turnout. From what I heard, it was anticipated to be 500-1000 in attendance...last count I heard was 2800+! Not only that, but I got the pleasure to meet and hang with some other cool creators, like Raven Perez and Evan Dahm (check out links to their pages to the right). So, a huge thanks to Chance Whitmire, the Asheville Art Museum, and everyone else involved with Fanaticon 2010! I loved it and can't wait to hear about next year's plans!

* In more convention news, it looks like I will be at HeroesCon 2010 in Charlotte, NC! My buddy Jeremy Massie has allowed me to mooch off his table, so I'll be there at least Saturday and possibly Sunday with all my normal goodies! Stop by...

* The finished pages for "Suggestion Box #4: Day at the Museum" were sent to Katie Omberg on Friday for final printing. We should be getting those bad boys very soon, followed by some other cool "Suggestion Box" news!

* Brad Jaskula put the finishing touches on his story for "The Adventurers of Liberty City" #6, so I should be finalizing everything and sending it off to the printers within the week! More info soon...

* Josh Talley and I have been brainstorming like crazy and we have some good ideas for future T.A.K. Comics releases. More info VERY soon...

Saturday is the day!

Joshua Talley and I will be at Fanaticon in Asheville, NC from 10 AM to 5 PM. We'll be selling all of our books...I'll have copies of "The Adventurers of Liberty City" graphic novel, and we'll be debuting "T.A.K. Presents" #1!

Not only that, but we'll be sharing a table with the very cool Jeremy Massie! Stop by and see us. T.A.K. Presents #1

Hey, guys!

Finally getting back in the swing of things in the comic world! The day job whisked me away to Florida for a few weeks last month, so it's good to be back home and let the creative juices flow some more. Eww, that sounds gross...

Anyway, Josh, my son Christopher, and I put the finishing touches on the long-talked about "T.A.K. Presents" #1 and will be getting it back from the printer in a few days!

While "FLiP On" is our humorous anthology, this new collection features serialized stories diving into the realms of action, adventure, heroics, and sci-fi! We kick off #1 with "Ronun & Monkai", a wild story of a samurai nun, her loyal monkey monk sidekick, and their battle with the evil Dragon Priest; "The Naturals of Disaster",exploring the territory of regular criminals given awesome powers; and "J.E.T.",the Justice Enforcement Team, an exciting adventure following kid heroes on a strange world, searching for a demented scientist...co-created and drawn by my 8 year old son, Christopher Smith!

The book will be available for sale on-line soon, but Josh and I are hoping to have some issues hot off the presses for our trip to Fanaticon this Saturday...stay tuned for more info on that!

David Simonton's Free Comic Book Day signing!

Hello!

It's time to get the ball rolling on lots more "The Adventurers of Liberty City" stuff! While Brad is currently putting the finishing touches on his story for #6, I'll be starting the penciling on #7 within the next week!

But in even better news, "The Adventurers of Liberty City" graphic novel collection of our first story arc, "Reunion", should be back from the printers today! Some minor issues prevented it from getting here sooner, unfortunately, but rest assured, I'll have plenty of copies on hand for Fanaticon in Asheville, NC on May 15th!

The main point here, though, is to mention David Simonton's in-store signing at Comics Plus in Macon, GA on Free Comic Book Day! David will be there with issues of "The Adventurers of Liberty City" and "Wichita Gravy" for sale and will be giving out copies of "The Adventurers of Liberty City Index" Free Comic Book Day Special! It's been a busy few weeks, as far as comic work goes! I just got word from Vernon Lee the other day that the first issue of "Vultar: The Ultimate Hero" is being printed and should be in our hands by next weekend! I'll keep you guys posted on that...

In other big news, Brad, David, and I just put the finished touches on "The Adventurers of Liberty City Index" for Free Comic Book Day!

For those of you who don't know, Free Comic Book Day is an annual event, held the first Saturday in May, where various comic publishers will offer certain new or reprinted issues of comics FREE at participating retailers! Nearly all comic book stores participate on some level, some with only a few titles, but others with a number of them! This was our first attempt at doing anything for FCBD, and we kicked around a few ideas before settling on doing an index type book. Similar to Marvel Universe Updates or DC's Who's Who, "The Adventurers of Liberty City Index" will deliver all kinds of info on the major characters from the title. There will also be a sneak peek at the cover to the upcoming "The Adventurers of Liberty City" graphic novel collection of issues 1 thru 5!

So, here's the part where YOU guys can help! If you'd like your local comic book store to carry some copies of "The Adventurers of Liberty City Index" Free Comic Book Day Special, shoot me an email (mdsmithcomics@gmail.com) with the name of your local store and their address, phone number, and/or website. March Updates...

Thought I would take a minute to update you guys on comic happenings...

* Due to circumstances beyond my control (A.K.A. my day job), I've had to cancel my upcoming appearance at the Roanoke Valley ComiCon in April. On the plus side, however, I am officially going to be set up at the Small Press Expo (SPX) in Bethesda, MD on Sept. 11 and 12! It's gonna be a big comic party, cause I'll be surrounded by my fellow comic creators and collaborators Jason Pittman, Desiree Pittman, and Katie Omberg! More details coming soon...

* Vultar: The Ultimate Hero #1 is completed and is now in the hands of the printers! Should be hearing back any day now on the status of it and Vernon Lee should have copies of it in his hands in time for anyone at the Roanoke Valley ComiCon!

* I've been hard at work the past week or so, doing comic book covers for some comics that will be printed VERY soon! I finished penciling and inking the cover to T.A.K. Comics Presents #1 and Josh Talley will start the coloring process this weekend. Also, I completed the cover to the upcoming The Adventurers of Liberty City graphic novel, collecting the first 5 issues of the series! I should be sending both these off to the printers within the next two weeks...after coloring is all finished.

* Related to cover work, I also finished pencils and inks on the cover to....drumroll, please...The Adventurers of Liberty City Free Comic Book Day special! I'll be revealing more info soon!

* And hey, I'm not messing around this time...check back here NEXT WEEK for more info on the big project reveal. Trust me, it's worth it!

Suggestion Box #3: A Titanic Failure...available now!

I want to thank Brett from the Virginia ComiCon for putting on a really cool show last weekend. Katie Omberg and I split a table there (with my son Christopher helping to man the booth) and had an awesome time. Another thanks goes out to the people that bought some of our books! And on that note...

"Suggestion Box #3: A Titanic Failure" debuted at the Virginia ComiCon! Like the other Suggestion Box installments, this mini comic focuses on the woes of retail life. This particular issue is all about when I was working in a music/movie superstore when it was decided to stay open for 24 hours to sell "Titanic" as it was released on VHS. Written by me with art by Katie Omberg, it's a pretty funny little book!

VA ComiCon is this weekend (and other news)!!

Yeah, I've been a little lazy with the posts this month...but hey, it's cause I've been trying to get comic stuff done as well as keep the day job as sane as possible...I'm failing in that last area.

Anyway, wanted to take a minute to let everyone know that the next week or two will be NUTS in a very good way.

First of all, this Sunday, February 28th, is the Virginia ComiCon in Richmond, VA. It looks like it's gonna be a pretty cool show, honestly. Katie Omberg will be joining me and not only will we have all our individual goodies to sell, but we'll be debuting our new mini comic "Suggestion Box #3: A Titanic Failure". It's another true story about me working the graveyard shift the night "Titanic" came out for sale on VHS (I sound really old in this last sentence). It's pretty funny stuff, I think, and Katie's art makes it 10x better, easily. For more info on the show, click on their link over to the right. I think we're actually gonna be part of Publisher's Row, so I'm pretty geeked out about sitting near some of the Fangoria guys, haha.

Also, I'll be busting my rump on a few comic things over the next several days. Sometime between now and the second week of March, I plan on having "Vultar" #1, "The Adventurers of Liberty City" graphic novel collection, AND "T.A.K. Comics Presents" #1 sent off to the printers. How will I succeed? I have no idea, but it'll get done.

Mid February Updates...

Hey, folks! A short and sweet blog entry today, giving a few updates on things...

* FLiP On #2 is now available for sale through IndyPlanet.com! You can click on the link over to the right to view some preview pages and purchase it. Or, if you are gonna be in the area, I will have this new issue (as well as copies of everything else) at the Virgina ComiCon in Richmond on Feb. 28th. I'll be there sharing a table with Katie Omberg...

* Speaking of Ms. Omberg, she's putting the finishing touches on our second collaboration, which is "Suggestion Box #3: A Titanic Failure". Once again, I wrote the story and she's providing some really awesome artwork to go along with it. She really nailed the look and feel, so I have been really impressed with what I've seen. She's also hard at work on a nice autobiographical comic about her coming out. Do yourself a favor and click on her name over to the right to see her blog. You'll be glad you did!

* I'll be wrapping up the first issue of "Vultar" within the next week and prepping it to be sent to the printers. More updates and character sketches will be posted next weekend, possibly.

Here comes Vultar...

Hey, folks! Time for a little comic update...it's seemed like I've been all over the place with working on different books and different stories. It's like I'm making a lot of progress, yet doesn't feel like it cause everything is so scattered, haha. One of those projects I am working on is something I've mentioned in several posts lately...the comic adaptation of "Vultar".

"Vultar" is a superhero novel about a normal man from Earth, who is given amazing powers and abilities by an alien race. Now that he has these powers, he has become Earth's sworn protector. The author of the book, Vernon Lee, met me at a convention last year and liked some of the stuff I had done in "The Adventurers of Liberty City". We talked back and forth, saw each other at another con, and eventually, Vernon asked if I would help him try to adapt "Vultar" into comic book format.

So, what started as an attempt at co-scripting the comic with Vernon and working on some character designs has evolved into drawing the first issue for him. I've penciled 9 pages of the 20-page premiere issue, and I think it's coming along nicely. The cover to the comic is a beautiful painted image of Vultar, provided by Matt Slay. It's pretty wild, so I can't wait to show it to you guys. I should be wrapping it up within the next month, and Vernon and I will debut the first issue at the Roanoke Valley ComiCon in April.Til next time,

FLiP On #2 is on the way!

Hoooot! Hooooot! All aboard the Year of Comics train...it's now a-rolling. Okay, this was the dumbest way to ever start a post...

Anyway, I'm happy to announce that Josh Talley and I got confirmation today that "FLiP On" #2 is now being printed. So, yes, that means we'll have the copies in our paws within the next few weeks. You can catch a glimpse of the cover above...basically several little weird sketches done by Josh and me over the last several years of our life. I'm excited about it (of course, I'm excited every time one of my little books gets to see the light of day), but looking at the digital proof of it today made me even more excited. It looks even better than Josh or I thought it would.

We've got some of the favorites from issue 1 returning, such as "Moe & Ron", "Inhabitionless", "Hang in There", and "System One". We also have two new features: "Metal Head Manny", a tale written and illustrated by me flashing back to the glory days of hair metal...and the countless metal posers; and "How To Draw Manga", a little tutorial cooked up by Josh and myself about how to draw your very own manga comic...if you are lame enough to try. As soon as the book is available to order on IndyPlanet. com, I'll be posting the link. Even cooler news is that I should be getting it back from the printers right before I head off to Virginia ComiCon in Richmond on Feb. 28th. So, if you're gonna be there, grab a copy from me!

Top 10 cds for 2009

Yeah, I know...we're almost a month into 2010 and I'm FINALLY getting around to this list. Trust me...compiling a best of list for a year is a lot harder than it sounds usually. So, I should make note that when making my list for a year, I exclude greatest hits released in said year; the songs weren't recorded that year, it seems like a cop out to me. But I still sometimes throw them in my honorable mention category. So, for 2009 honorable mentions we have: Thao with the Get Down Stay Down - "Know Better Learn Faster", Kylesa - "Static Tensions", Bury Your Dead - "It's Nothing Personal", "Away We Go" soundtrack, and Foo Fighters - "Greatest Hits" (highly recommended for the two new songs and disc of videos at least!). Now, on to the list:

10. The Prodigy - "Invaders Must Die" - Even though this group hasn't been as huge as they were in the late 90s, they are still cranking out some great techno music (an oxymoron in most cases). This album doesn't disappoint...if you were a fan of "Fat of the Land" back in the day, you'll dig this one.

9. Constants - "The Foundation, The Machine, The Ascension" - I stumbled across this band when doing some background checking into the band from #5 on this list. Some very nice, moody alternative rock. The lead vocalist reminds me a little of Gavin Rossdale.

8. Everclear - "In A Different Light" - Some may say this is border line greatest hits. Art and his new line-up recorded acoustic versions of some of their best songs from earlier in Everclear's career and added a couple of new tracks. I'll be the first to admit that I was a HUGE Everclear fan years ago, but their last couple of cds were major disappointments to me. Hope this signifies them getting back on track.

7. The Flaming Lips - "Embryonic" - I've been hooked on The Flaming Lips since I saw them open up for Stone Temple Pilots and Butthole Surfers during the summer of '93. This year's release is the best cd they've recorded since "The Soft Bulletin", at least. It's all over the place, musically, much like several of their early albums, but it flows and makes beautiful noise.

6. Silversun Pickups - "Swoon" - The band's sophomore effort really paid off here. It's nice to hear a fairly new alternative band that doesn't...well, SUCK. Most bands that have come about in the past several years in that genre have been supremely lame. Silversun manages to bring something new to the table, but also some nostalgia element...listen to them and tell me you don't hear a little Smashing Pumpkins there.

5. Caspian - "Tertia" - I discovered this band when checking out a compilation cd from some music magazine. They are all instrumental and simply amazing. Very talented guys that produce some excellent rock music for mellowing out times.

4. Jeremy Enigk - "OK Bear" - Being a huge fan of Sunny Day Real Estate, I am, of course, going to dive into a release from their lead singer. This is Enigk's 4th solo album, and quite possibly, his best. He retains the sound that sets his music apart from his band's, but at the same time, does less orchestrations here and focuses on the rock element from SDRE.

3. Mastodon - "Crack The Skye" - Wow, this album blew me away! I'm not quite sure how this metal band keeps getting better and better, but they do. Not afraid to take risks and doing something different has paid off for the guys with this year's cd.

2. Them Crooked Vultures - self-titled - Dave Grohl. Josh Homme. John Paul Jones. Need I say anymore? A great rock album, that could have very well been the new Queens of the Stone Age cd...regardless, totally kicks ass.

1. Baroness - "Blue Record" - Holy crap...those were my thoughts as I first listened to this entire album. I'm a big fan of heavy metal, but it's been a looooong time since a new metal band has really wowed me. Baroness did it. Every track on this cd is a masterpiece...great instrumentation...a perfect balance of heaviness and melodies. Highly recommended for fans of heavy music.

Convention Updates!

Howdy!

No, I'm not posting my Top 10 cds of 2009 yet...that will be later this week. I did want to take a minute to update everyone on the 2010 convention status. Two...that's right, TWO...new convention appearances have been added to my list! And even better...I'll have some of my buds along with me!

On Sunday, February 28, I'll be at the Virginia ComiCon in Richmond, VA, sharing a table with Katie Omberg! You'll remember that Katie is the super awesome lady that worked on the Hip Hop Hooray mini-comic. We're planning another mini-comic to possibly debut at this show, too! I have yet to attend this show, but I've heard from loads of people that it's a really good one. They actually put the show on three or four times a year, and the last show of the year is a big two day one with loads of guest. I'm pretty stoked to be part of their first event for 2010!

Also added is Fanaticon in Asheville, NC on May 15. Josh Talley (my co-creator from T.A.K. Comics on the FLiP On title) and I will be manning the table there. It takes place at the Asheville Art Museum and if the guest list SO FAR is any indication of how cool this show will be, then you're not gonna want to miss it! Not only will my good buddy Brian Wingrove from Bear Butt Comics be there, but also Hope Larson, Dustin Harbin, Plastic Farm Press, WideAwake Press, and many other great dudes!

Top 10 Ongoing Comic Book Series for 2009

I'm back with another top 10 list. The title of the post is self-explanatory, so I'll begin. Honorable mentions should go out to New Mutants (Marvel), Irredeemable (Boom!), and Thunderbolts (Marvel).

10. Secret Six (DC) - I was a big fan of the Villains United and Secret Six limited series from the past several years and this ongoing has kept the same pace and unpredictability that I love from those books. Deadshot, Catman, Scandal, and Ragdoll seem to be the only definite constants, but the book even makes you wonder sometimes. Nicola Scott's art is a beautiful companion to Gail Simone's words.

9. Dark Avengers (Marvel) - If someone would have told me a year ago that my favorite Avengers title would be one where the team is compiled of villains and no "real" former Avengers, I would have called them a dirty liar. Well, I take it back now. While still not truly feeling like an Avengers book, this is essentially Marvel's Secret Six (well, Thunderbolts is that as well, but anyway...). This team is just waiting for the one thing to cause it to all come apart...we'll see if this year's "Siege" does that.

8. Chew (Image) - One of the most original and funny books I've read in awhile. In a time when eating chicken is outlawed, the FDA has a special force assigned to bring down illegal chicken cookeries. John Chu is a new member...and he happens to be able to trace the history of food whenever he eats it. This leads to some interesting murder cases. Quite bizarre, but well worth the read.

7. Gotham City Sirens (DC) - Clearly, the villains reigned supreme in 2009. This selection features the hi jinx and adventures of three Bat-baddies: Catwoman, Harley Quinn, and Poison Ivy. Written by the unbelievable Paul Dini with stunning art by Gullem March, this is one of the best of the bat titles right now.

6. Deadpool (Marvel) - Deadpool's latest ongoing by Daniel Way and Paco Medina has found a warm spot in my heart. I was uncertain about a new monthly by this creative team, but they impressed me and each issue is hilarious with a wild, usually violent, storyline.

5. The Web (DC) - I'm a HUGE fan of the Red Circle/Archie heroes. So, when I heard DC was getting another crack at putting out books about them (previous attempt was in the early 90s with their Impact line), I was all over it. So far, two ongoings have been created, with The Web being the best. Combining elements of the classic Web character with bits and pieces from the Impact counterpart, this is a great, classic superhero book with a modern twist. The Web attempts to avenge his brother's death, but uses his riches to enlist "Web Hosts" to wear a suit and help the cause.

4. Sweet Tooth (Vertigo) - After reading Jeff Lemire's Essex County trilogy from Top Shelf, I was a fan for life. His ongoing through Vertigo has been dubbed as "Mad Max meets Bambi"...odd, yet slightly accurate. In a post-apocalyptic future, a young, human/deer hybrid boy is befriended by an elderly man in search of hope as a plague wipes out the human race. Touching at times...dark and horrific at others.

3. Nova (Marvel) - Abnett & Lanning continue to come out on top at Marvel with their adventures of the cosmic fighter, Nova. This year, Nova has dealt with all the "space crossover events" and rebuilt the Nova Corps. Consistently a great read and the supporting cast is great (Darkhawk, baby!!)

2. Echo (Abstract) - Terry Moore is quite possibly one of the best modern comic book storytellers today. His sci-fi/action/adventure comic constantly leaves you on the edge of your seat, as a woman (who already has enough troubles in her life) gets showered with a mysterious metal like material during a military exercise in the desert. Now, a top secret military group is after her...and the metal has formed a protective super suit over her body! Great, great book.

1. The Unwritten (Vertigo) - What would happen if the Harry Potter books were based on a real person? Could you imagine the media attention the kid/man would get? And what happened if it started to seem like this Harry basis was somehow, maybe pulled from the books? And some of the other characters, including the villains, were real, too? And the author left this Harry basis clues to uncovering the secrets of his life? That's "Unwritten" in a nutshell for you...a wild story with top notch art. You gotta read it to experience it.

Top 10 Comic Book Limited Series of 2009

For the past several years, Brad, David, and I (along with a few of our friends) have been sharing our Top 10 lists in the areas of comics and music, mainly. So, I figured that I would post my 2009 selections on my blog for all to see. Our only "requirement" for the Top 10 limited series list is that the book has to be COMPLETED in that year (not necessarily started). One of my selections actually ended this week, so I'm letting it slide. We also lump original graphic novels and one-shots in this category. First, I should note the honorable mentions...those books that almost made it to the top 10, but not quite...and those are Image's "Savage", Marvel's "X-Men: Manifest Destiny", and Dark Horse's "Werewolves on the Moon vs. Vampires". All good reads, but on to the BEST...

10. Atomic Robo: Shadow From Beyond Time (Red 5) - The third volume in the series of Atomic Robo books pits the robot character in a time traveling bout against a giant creature. Luckily, Robo is able to team up with various scientists (and past and future versions of himself) to stop the creature. Action packed with lots of humor!

9. Dead Irons (Dynamite) - Take vampires and werewolves...put them in the Old West...add in some dysfunctional family drama...and bam, you've got an awesome book!

8. New Avengers: The Reunion (Marvel) - After some minor Skrull trouble in the MU, Clint Barton (Hawkeye or Ronin or whatever) and Mockingbird are reunited, after both have died! This limited series gave the couple some alone time...fighting crime and each other, of course. This comic convinced me that Jim McCann SHOULD be writing one of the ongoing Avengers books cause this was some solid work, folks.

7. GI Joe: Cobra (IDW) - The comic license for GI Joe shifted from DDP to IDW this year, meaning the launch of new ongoing and limited series. This one by Christos Gage, Mike Costa, and Antonio Fuso features a Joe agent (Chuckles) infiltrating Cobra...at heavy costs. Well written, great art.

6. We Kill Monsters (Red 5) - A great mix of humor and horror as several breed of monsters attack a small town...leaving it up to the slacker brothers who own the local garage to fight them off. Oh, did I forget to mention one of the brothers gets an infected arm and it mutates into a monster arm?

5. Mercy Sparx (DDP) - Mercy is a demon, living on Earth. Her mission: to bring angels back to Heaven that have fled in order to live life on Earth. A recurring theme I have is that I love humor and horror mixed...this one delivers. An entertaining read for metal fans as well.

4. The DeadBeat (Alterna) - Jeremy Massie's mini comics were collected into graphic novel format this year. A great story about a down-and-out superhero who is reunited with his now adult long-lost daughter...and she's got powers. Massie really hits the nail on the head with the humor, but also with the slice-of-life type storyline. His art really shines here, too...the perfect blend of simple cartoony style with a classic superhero touch...almost reminiscent of cartoons I grew up watching.

3. X-Men/Spider-Man (Marvel) - Since the core X-titles have really disappointed me lately, this was a breath of fresh air that really makes me want Christos Gage and Mario Alberti to be the regular creative team on Uncanny X-Men. Each issue chronicles a group of X-Men teaming up with Spider-Man over the years (basically the 60s, 80s, 90s, and current rosters/costume changes of the heroes here) to battle common foes...and they slowly realize that all these encounters are tied together!

2. Destroyer (Marvel/MAX) - Wow, when I heard of this book, I thought it would be good, but had no idea I would enjoy it this much! Robert Kirkman and Cory Walker give us an aging superhero who is near indestructible...but can that stop him from getting too old to battle? When a villain from the past returns and seeks to hurt Destroyer's family, he must postpone retirement to take care of business.

1. Pixu: The Mark of Evil (Dark Horse) - A collaboration between Vasilis Lolos, Becky Cloonan, Fabio Moon, and Gabriel Ba to tell a very dark horror tale, centered on the tenants of an apartment building, who are slowly coming apart at the seams. Each creator is GREAT on the books they have done separately over the years. But having all 4 of them working together on a horror story was quite amazing! Highly recommended!

2010...the year of comics!

I hope everyone had a great New Year's...I know I did! Time to usher in 2010, and frankly, I'm hoping this is gonna be a GREAT year for me and comics. I've already got several things cooking in the pot, so here's a brief rundown of what I have been up to the past few weeks and what's on the very near horizon...

* The Adventurers of Liberty City #6 is getting closer and closer to completion. Brad Jaskula has done a very awesome cover to it that I will be coloring for him shortly. Also, we're gathering everything for a nice graphic novel collection of the first 5 issues of The Adventurers of Liberty City! It's gonna be packed with extras, including some early character sketches by Brad, David, and me as well as some bonus pinups by some other comic creators!

* Finishing up FLiP On #2 with Josh Talley...we should be sending that off to the printers by the end of next week, which is always exciting. We're also a little over half way done with the fist issue of our new anthology, TAK Presents, which will enter a different territory than FLiP On. Two other projects are in the works...one written by Josh with art by the both of us...the other written by me with a new artist that will blow you away! More to come...

* If you missed the recent post, Suggestion Box #2: Hip Hop Hooray is now available (click on the title of it over to your right for more info). Katie Omberg and I are planning another venture into the Suggestion Box domain, so that should be coming very soon as well!

* Been working on co-scripting and doing character designs for the debut issue of Vultar, based on the superhero novel by Vernon Lee! I'll be posting some of those sketches and more info about all that very soon. Looks like I'll start drawing the first issue this week, actually...

* Over the course of the next month or so, I'll be updating the "2010 Comic Convention Appearances" bar over to the right. So far, I'm booked for the Roanoke Valley ComiCon on April 3, 2010. Got another con in the works and making plans for quite a few more...keep checking back.

* Within the next few days, I'll be posting my opinion on the Top 10 ongoing comic and Top 10 limited series for 2009. Later in the month, I'll do another post for my Top 10 cds for 2009. Should be worth reading...

Well, I think that's all the updates for right now. As you can see, I've been plenty busy, and I honestly hope it won't slow down. Check back in a few days for more info...I promise, it'll be good!

Charlotte ComiCon tomorrow and the debut of "Hip Hop Hooray"!

Merry Day-After Christmas, guys! I hope you all had a nice day yesterday!

Just wanted to remind all of you within driving distance...I'll be at the Charlotte ComiCon TOMORROW (December 27) from 10 AM to 4 PM, located at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Charlotte, NC. Aaaaaannnnddd, since I always like to have a little something new or extra at each con I go to, I want to announce that Charlotte ComiCon will see the debut of my first mini comic! Yeah, I know, I worked that backwards...I've produced 7 full size comics before I did my first mini. But anyway, this little book is called "Suggestion Box #2: Hip Hop Hooray". I worked on it with the very talented Katie Omberg (check out her link to the right as well). Katie has done several minis and they are all really funny stuff! After reading her first issue of "Suggestion Box" (all about the horrors of working in a framing shop), she and I started cooking up ideas on collaborating on either a second issue of that title or something new all together. What was born was a true tale written by me, involving customers in the various music stores I worked in years ago, with some wonderful and hilarious art by Katie!

"Suggestion Box #2: Hip Hop Hooray" is EXTREMELY limited, so I urge you guys to grab it while you can. That's not to say the story will never be available again (trust me, Katie and I have a few ideas up our sleeves!), but you should definitely get it while the gettin' is good! Just wanted to take a minute to wish all of you a Merry Christmas! It's shaping up to be a great one around here, so I hope it all goes well for you guys. Thanks for making 2009 a great read to not only create comics, but to read comics as well!

One more con before the end of '09...

Hey, guys!

Been a bit since I posted something...but hey, it's all been for a good reason!

I've been super hard at work on many projects lately. I just wrapped up my half of "The Adventurers of Liberty City" #6...this issue is split into two 10-page stories, one written and drawn by me, the other written by David Simonton and drawn by Brad Jaskula. So, my story, which involves Risk and new team member Aviatrix taking on new villain Jerboa, is completely penciled, inked, and lettered. Also, I'm compiling stuff with Josh Talley for the "FLiP On" #2. We should have that issue done by the end of the month and off to the printers. Last, but not least, I've been doing some conceptual design sketches for a new superhero comic based on the "Vultar" novel by Vernon Lee...lots more info on that one coming soon!

In other very cool news, I got added at the last minute as a guest for the Charlotte ComiCon! The one day show takes place at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in downtown Charlotte, NC on Dec. 27, 2009! Should be a great time, and there's already an impressive guest list so far, including Al Bigley, Brian Wingrove, Andy Smith, Budd Root, Chrissie Zullo, and many more! Happy Belated Thanksgiving and some minor comic teases

I'm back after a nice, little break the past week or so. Christopher, Xavier, and I took a few days at the end of last week to head down to GA to visit family and friends. It was great, to say the least. We made it back to VA on Wednesday to prepare for a nice Thanksgiving feast at my mother-in-law's house. And today carries on with our (me and the boys) tradition for Black Friday...not leaving the house and spending all day watching movies, playing outside, playing video games, and eating pizza. So far, it's the makings of a nice day!

But as far as comic news...Brad, David, and I had a nice 80 Pork meeting while we were all in GA at the same time. I can't recall any time we actually all sat down in the same room discussing 80 Pork Comic stuff...all our communication is usually done via internet and phone! So much stuff to tell you that we are planning that I am nearly bursting at the seams (or is that all the turkey I ate yesterday causing that??). I don't want to reveal too much...I might jinx us... but we have some great plans for The Adventurers of Liberty City in 2010, like the next story arc, a Free Comic Book Day special, and a very cool announcement for later in the year!

RVCC Fall 2009

The fall version of Roanoke Valley ComiCon has come and gone. I want to thank everyone that picked up copies of "The Adventurers of Liberty City", "Wichita Gravy", and "FLiP On". I really love going to the small shows like this...just hanging out, talking with attendees and other creators, making connections, trading books with folks...it's a good time. The con seemed a little slower as opposed to the April show, but I guess the "convention season" is winding down for the year anyway.

In addition to seeing some old friends at the show, I got to meet Brian Wingrove and Jeremy Massie. Brian self-publishes a comic called "Intermezzo", a humorous superhero book, through his imprint Bear Butt Comics. Brian's got some nice art and in a way, what he's doing and trying to accomplish with "Intermezzo" seems parallel to what me, David, and Brad are doing with "The Adventurers of Liberty City". It's pretty cool to find someone who thinks like we do in the superhero game. If you've already met Jeremy Massie at a con through the years, then he definitely needs no introduction...he's one of those guys that sticks in your head. He had some nice mini comix (the hilarious "Pornin'" and the deep and slightly eerie "Caw"), but his big piece is the digest sized graphic novel "The DeaDBeat", a great book about a burnout superhero finding out his long-thought-dead daughter is alive and has powers as well. Jeremy's art is that perfect blend of cartoony with that realistic look...I'm a sucker for that kind of stuff! I added links for both Brian and Jeremy's websites in the list of creators on the right. Check them out when you can.

Inside FLiP On #1: Super Tourette's Dude and Moe & Ron

We are just a few days away from the fall 2009 Roanoke Valley ComiCon! I am super excited. My son, Christopher, and fellow creator, Josh Talley, will be there with me. We'll have plenty of copies of "THE ADVENTURERS OF LIBERTY CITY" and "WICHITA GRAVY" to sell, as well as premiering the first issue of "FLiP On"!

We have two more features from FLiP On #1 to check out this time...the first one being Super Tourette's Dude! Simply put, this comic sprang out of a conversation that Josh and I had about what would happen if your stereotypical, big cape, cheesy grin hero actually had tourette's (or at least used that as an excuse to speak his mind!). Super Tourette's Dude is the answer to that age old question. This 6 page short should offer a few laughs as S.T.D. goes head to head with the dreaded...BEAR ARMS! Super Tourette's Dude is a feature that will pop up here and there in the pages of FLiP On.

Our last story in FLiP On #1 is Moe & Ron...just two good ol' country boys waxing philosophical on their everyday lives. They may not be the brightest of fellows, but they sure have a lot on their mind to discuss. The funny thing is that Josh and I actually know people who talk like this and have conversations of this nature. This is funny one not to be missed!

Inside FLiP On #1: Hang in There & System One

I'm gonna try to catch up as best as I can before this coming weekend (the Roanoke Valley ComiCon!). With Halloween celebrations and all four of us here getting sick, it's been a rough week and a half. But we're all in better shape now and I'm finally getting around to posting more info on FLiP On #1.

Another story featured in our first issue will be "Hang In There". This is, quite frankly, a tale that needs no introduction. We're all familiar with that little "Hang In There" guy...we've been "fortunate" enough to come across him through scribbles in the office place or maybe even on a public bathroom wall. Some joker always has to be the funny man with this ridiculous and craptastic little guy with the big nose hanging for his life. Well, Josh Talley decided to turn the tables and put the HiT guy in some real trouble. You'll just have to read it to see...

"System One" is probably one of my personal favorites in FLiP On #1. This whole idea came to Josh and I when we were joking about having robots in the work place...how their normal every day conversations would go, the jokes they would tell, etc. We were cracking ourselves up in the process before we realized that we had quite a few installments of a short comic strip already plotted! Josh worked his computer skills and cooked up some really nice robots made out of everyday household items. I'm sure "System One" will give you guys a chuckle or two. I've already written the script for the second "System One" story to be included in the second issue of FLiP On, and I think it's even funnier stuff!

Pumpkin Patch Pictures!

Recently, Christina, Christopher, Xavier, and I spent a cool Saturday afternoon at the Apple Festival at Drumheller's Orchard. Besides have rows of apple trees and more apple-made products than you can think, it's also a mini fall festival, complete with a pumpkin patch, corn maze, hayrides, and of course, those inflatible moon bounce things for the kids. We had a great time! And let me just comment that the apples we tried are some of THE best apples I have ever tasted. Enjoy the pics...

Inside FLiP On #1: Inhabitionless and A Little Twisted

I know I didn't post this as quickly as I thought I would...working on various comic projects the past 2 weeks has kept me pretty occupied (as well as both kids being sick!)...but I'm gonna get all the FLiP On updates done before the book debuts at Roanoke Valley ComiCon on Nov. 14!

For this installment, I'm gonna discuss "Inhabitionless" and "A Little Twisted".

"Inhabitionless" will be an ongoing feature in FLiP On...showcasing the daily life of our nameless focal point. As the name suggests, he has no inhibitions...and the misspelling of the word lets us know that he makes a habit out of displaying this lack of holding back. He does and says the things we think in the back of our heads, but would never say. A short strip written and drawn by Josh Talley, it's simple yet hilarious!

"A Little Twisted" was one of the first features we decided should be in FLiP On. The name actually sprang from a drawing done by Gabe Talley years ago, which gives us a twist on that old saying "killing two birds with one stone". I didn't want to copy any of the drawings from "A Little Twisted" here, because I feel it will ruin the effect of seeing them on the page, being that they are full page drawings. And two of them will be in FLiP On #1, the previously mentioned by Gabe and Josh's take on "The pen is mightier than the sword". We have other ideas for warping the words of idioms for future installments of "A Little Twisted", so it'll definitely be back.

I'll post a look at "System One" and "Hang in There" in my next installment...

Drive-in!!

Last Friday, I was talking to a co-worker (yes, like the overwhelming majority of people who do indie comic book stuff, I, too, have a day job!) about random things and somehow the subject of drive-in theaters came up. Anyone that's known me for any period of time knows that I am a nostalgic dude...if it's related to my childhood or teen years, I'm all over it. But I also have a soft spot for stuff from the 70's...blame it on watching movies like "Dazed & Confused" and "The Stoned Age" as a teenager. Anyway, I LOVE the idea of drive-in theaters. However, being a kid of the 80's, they were on their decline around that time. I can't remember any within driving distance at that time when I was growing up in GA. So, this co-worker mentioned that a drive-in opened up in Keysville, VA (about an hour from here) earlier this year. Within minutes, I started doing that trusty Google searching to find out if this was true and if it was open. It was true and it was open...

I immediately cooked up a plan to surprise my wife and sons with a trip to the Keysville Drive-in last Friday night. Not only was it decently priced ($6 for adults, $3 for kids), but it included TWO movies...the first one starting at 7:30 was "G-Force", the second being "Surrogates". It was a perfect weekend for us to go...Christopher and Xavier wanted to see "G-Force" and Christina, Christopher, and I definitely wanted to see "Surrogates" (being it's based on the awesome Top Shelf graphic novel written by Rob Venditti!). I managed to keep the surprise on the way there (except for Christina figuring it out, arrrgh) and they were all excited. We got there early, so we had plenty of time to get a good spot, pop open the hatch, lay down some blankets, and even throw around the football before the movies started.

Let me just say, it was great! Just tune your radio to the appropriate dial, and you have all the sound while watching a movie under the stars. I think I sat there gazing up at the night sky during most of "G-Force", actually. I felt like I had gone through a time warp to a simpler era. I was loving every second. There were even old school snack bar commercials during the intermission between the movies! The popcorn and other treats were decently priced and there was a mini arcade with some cool games. We are definitely looking forward to going back...especially since upcoming movies might be "Zombieland" and "Where The Wild Things Are".
